MA Creative Writing – (Canterbury)

What I will learn?

  • Creative Writing Workshops: Students will participate in workshops led by experienced writers and faculty members, where they will have the opportunity to share their work, receive constructive feedback, and refine their writing techniques. Workshops cover a range of genres, including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, scriptwriting, and experimental forms.
  • Craft and Technique: The program focuses on developing students' understanding of the craft and technique of writing across different genres. Students will explore narrative structure, character development, voice, point of view, dialogue, imagery, poetic language, and other essential elements of creative writing through a combination of reading assignments, writing exercises, and critical analysis.
  • Literary Studies and Criticism: Students will study literary theory and criticism to deepen their understanding of the broader literary tradition and its influence on contemporary writing practices. They will explore key concepts and debates in literary studies, such as genre theory, narrative theory, postcolonialism, feminism, and critical theory, and apply these insights to their own creative work.
  • Creative Research and Experimentation: The program encourages students to engage in creative research and experimentation, exploring innovative approaches to storytelling, form, and style. Students may experiment with hybrid genres, multimedia storytelling, digital literature, collaborative writing projects, and interdisciplinary creative practices.
  • Individual Mentoring and Support: Students receive individual mentoring and support from faculty members who are published writers and experienced creative writing instructors. Mentors provide personalized guidance, feedback, and encouragement to help students develop their unique voice and vision as writers.
  • Literary Events and Guest Speakers: Students have access to literary events, readings, and guest speakers in Canterbury, providing opportunities to engage with established writers, poets, publishers, and literary communities. These events enrich students' understanding of contemporary literary trends and offer insights into the professional aspects of writing and publishing.
  • Publishing and Professional Development: The program provides guidance on the professional aspects of writing, including publishing opportunities, literary agents, manuscript preparation, and career pathways in the creative industries. Students learn how to develop a writing portfolio, prepare submissions, and navigate the publishing industry.
  • Final Creative Project: The program culminates in a final creative project, such as a portfolio of original writing (e.g., a collection of short stories, poems, or essays), a screenplay, a stage play, or a multimedia project. Students work closely with faculty advisors to develop and refine their creative work, showcasing their skills and accomplishments as writers.
