What I will learn?
- Creative Writing Workshops: Students will participate in workshops led by experienced writers and faculty members, where they will have the opportunity to develop their writing skills across various genres, including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, scriptwriting, and experimental forms. Workshops provide a supportive environment for students to share their work, receive feedback, and refine their writing techniques.
- Craft and Technique: The program will cover essential elements of craft and technique in creative writing, such as narrative structure, character development, voice, point of view, dialogue, imagery, and poetic language. Students will learn how to craft compelling stories, poems, essays, and scripts through a combination of reading assignments, writing exercises, and critical analysis.
- Literary Theory and Criticism: Students will study literary theory and criticism to deepen their understanding of the craft of writing and the broader literary tradition. They will explore key concepts and debates in literary studies, such as genre theory, narrative theory, postcolonialism, feminism, and critical theory, and apply these insights to their own creative practice.
- Creative Research and Experimentation: The program encourages students to engage in creative research and experimentation, exploring innovative approaches to storytelling, form, and style. Students may experiment with hybrid genres, multimedia storytelling, digital literature, collaborative writing projects, and interdisciplinary creative practices.
- Writing Across Cultures and Languages: The dual-location setup of the program offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in diverse cultural and linguistic contexts. Students will explore how cultural identities, histories, and landscapes shape literary imagination and may draw inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of both Canterbury and Paris in their writing.
- Literary Events and Guest Speakers: Students will have access to literary events, readings, and guest speakers in both Canterbury and Paris, providing opportunities to engage with established writers, poets, publishers, and literary communities. These events enrich students' understanding of contemporary literary trends and offer insights into the professional aspects of writing and publishing.
- Creative Collaboration and Networking: The program fosters a sense of community among students, encouraging collaboration, peer feedback, and networking. Students may have the opportunity to work together on creative projects, participate in literary journals or anthologies, and build connections with fellow writers, editors, and literary agents.
- Publishing and Professional Development: The program provides guidance on the professional aspects of writing, including publishing opportunities, literary agents, manuscript preparation, and career pathways in the creative industries. Students will learn how to develop a writing portfolio, prepare submissions, and navigate the publishing industry.
- Individual Mentoring and Support: Students receive individual mentoring and support from faculty members who are published writers and experienced creative writing instructors. Mentors provide personalized guidance, feedback, and encouragement to help students develop their unique voice and vision as writers.
