MA Architecture and Urban Design – (Canterbury & Paris)

What I will learn?

  • Architectural Design Studios: Students will engage in design studio projects where they have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to practical design challenges. These projects may range from small-scale interventions to larger urban design proposals and will encourage creativity, critical thinking, and design innovation.
  • Urban Design and Planning: The program will cover urban design principles, theories, and methodologies, exploring topics such as urban morphology, placemaking, sustainable urbanism, and the role of public space in shaping cities. Students will analyze case studies of urban developments and learn how to conceptualize and implement urban design strategies that respond to social, environmental, and economic challenges.
  • Architectural History and Theory: Students will study the history and theory of architecture, examining key movements, ideas, and practitioners that have shaped the built environment. They will explore architectural discourse from various cultural and historical perspectives and critically evaluate the relationship between architecture, society, and culture.
  • Digital Design and Fabrication: The program may include modules on digital design tools, parametric modeling, computational design, and digital fabrication techniques. Students will learn how to use advanced software tools to generate and visualize design proposals and may have the opportunity to experiment with digital fabrication technologies such as 3D printing and CNC machining.
  • Sustainable Design and Environmental Strategies: Sustainable design principles will be integrated into the curriculum, emphasizing strategies for energy efficiency, resource conservation, and climate-responsive architecture. Students will explore sustainable building materials, passive design strategies, renewable energy systems, and green building certification standards.
  • Cultural Contexts and Urban Narratives: Students will consider the cultural, social, and historical contexts of architectural and urban design interventions, exploring the narratives embedded within the built environment. They will investigate how architecture and urban design contribute to the identity, memory, and cultural heritage of cities and communities.
  • Field Trips and Site Visits: Students will have the opportunity to participate in field trips, site visits, and architectural tours in both Canterbury and Paris, allowing them to experience firsthand the rich architectural heritage and urban landscapes of these cities. These experiences will enhance students' understanding of architectural and urban design principles in diverse cultural contexts.
  • Professional Practice and Industry Engagement: The program may include modules on architectural practice, construction technology, project management, and professional ethics. Students will learn about the legal, regulatory, and ethical aspects of architectural practice and may have the opportunity to engage with practitioners, industry professionals, and regulatory bodies through guest lectures, workshops, and networking events.
